Subaru of America is recalling 3,251 2016 model-year Legacy and Outback vehicles to address a potential fire risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

Because securing nuts weren’t properly tightened, the drive shaft may separate from the rear differential. Subsequent contact with the fuel tank could result in a fuel leak, posing a fire risk, NHTSA said.

The Legacy sedans were manufactured from Oct. 24 to Nov. 16 of this year. The Outback wagons were manufactured from Oct. 24 to Nov. 17.

Subaru dealers will inspect the fastening nuts, and then tighten or replace them as necessary. There will be no charge for this service.

The recall began on Dec. 10. Vehicle owners can reach Subaru customer service at (856) 488-8500. Subaru's number for this recall is WQV-57.
