Porsche AG has named Klaus Zellmer as the new president and chief executive for Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) to replace Detlev von Platen, who will return to Germany with a promotion.

Zellmer replaces von Platen, who led Porsche's North American business unit since 2008. The moves are effective Nov. 1. Between 2008 and 2014, Porsche doubled U.S. deliveries to 47,000 vehicles from 26,000 units. He oversaw the introduction of the Panamera sports sedan in 2009 and the Macan compact luxury SUV in 2014.

In May, Porsche opened the $100 million Porsche Experiance Center and headquarters in Atlanta.

The move allows von Platen to assume the role of chairman of the Board of Directors for PCNA. He will be responsible for global sales and marketing and succeed Bernhard Maier, who was appointed chairman of the Board of Management for Volkswagen AG's Skoda unit.

Zellmer was named head of overseas and emerging markets earlier this year. He is currently responsible for Porsche subsidiaries in Australia, Japan and Korea, and the sports car manufacturer's regional offices in Asia-Pacific, South America, the Middle East and Africa.
