General Motors is recalling 45,785 2014-2015 model-year Chevrolet Spark and 2015 Sonic subcompact cars equipped with the base radio and OnStar because chime alerts may not work properly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

A software issue may cause the radio to lock up, triggering the display to go blank and all audio functions to cease. As a result, there may be no warning chimes, such as those audible reminders to buckle seat belts and retrieve the key from the ignition before exiting the vehicle.

The Spark cars were manufactured from April 30, 2014, to May 20 of this year. The Sonic cars were manufactured from June 18, 2014, to June 10 of this year.

Dealers will update the radio software, free of charge, to resolve the problem. Vehicle owners can reach Chevrolet customer service at (800) 222-1020. GM’s number for this recall is 15504.
