Total registration for new and used import vehicles in New Zealand since January has risen 11 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the Motor Transport Association.

Through the first six months of the year, there were 140,475 new and used-import registrations compared with 126,236 for the first six months of 2014. Based on the current growth rate of 11 percent, the total market will grow from 265,000 units last year to approximately 295,000 units, which would be a new all-time record in sales.

New commercial vehicle sales were up 8 percent, and used-commercial vehicles were up 17 percent. New passenger car figures were up 5 percent and used-import car numbers were up 17 percent. June was the strongest June for new car sales since 1989, the group said.

Toyota is the most-purchased brand for passenger cars with the Rav4, Highlander and Corolla the highest selling cars. For new commercial sales, the Ford Ranger lead the market in June, along with Holden’s Colorado, the Toyota Hilux, and Nissan’s Navara following closely in sales.
