Bolivia has made the use of RFID tags on vehicles mandatory as a way to detect unregistered and illegal vehicles, according to a report in informationweek.com.

The government is having gasoline stations read those tags to catch registration scofflaws and other wrongdoers, according to the report.

The pilot program yielded 12,000 illegal cars, and the report estimates that RFID tags can be purchased for as little as $5 up to about $100, and the readers are in the "low four figures."
