Apple's CarPlay automotive user interface will allow automakers to add their own apps so users can control vehicle functions such as climate control that go beyond infotainment functions, Apple announced at its World Wide Developers Conference, reports The Verge.

The June 8 announcement comes as automakers have begun rolling out CarPlay and Android Auto in select vehicles such as the Hyundai Sonata and Chevrolet Cruze.

Most automakers have committed to rolling out Apple CarPlay at some point with the notable exception of Toyota, who announced separately it may deploy Ford's open-source connected car platform, SmartDevice Link.
