Ford Edge Draws 5-Star Safety Score

The 2015 model-year Ford Edge has received a 5-Star overall vehicle score – the highest possible – in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

The 5-Star safety rating applies to both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive versions of the SUV. To qualify for the top overall score, the vehicle drew five stars in frontal and side crash tests, according to NHTSA. In the rollover protection evaluation, the model drew four stars.

Karco Engineering conducted the tests in late April, as part of NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program.

Standard and available technologies for the re-engineered Edge include:

• Standard active glove box knee airbag – An advanced design uses the glove box front to enhance knee protection for the front passenger in certain crashes.
• Available adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support – Radar can detect moving vehicles directly ahead, and the cruising speed can be changed if necessary. Collision warning triggers visual and audio alerts, if the system detects the following distance is diminishing too quickly and a collision may occur. The system can also pre-charge the brakes if the driver needs to stop suddenly.
• Available inflatable rear safety belts – This advanced restraint system combines attributes of safety belt and airbag technologies to reduce head, neck and chest injuries in frontal crashes. Crash force energy is distributed across five times more of an occupant’s torso than a traditional safety belt.
