Nissan is expanding a previous Takata air bag inflator recall to include 45,000 2006 model-year Sentra sedans.

This expansion includes Sentra sedans manufactured from Jan. 2, 2006, to Aug. 26, 2006. The vehicles were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, regions associated with high absolute humidity, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

Included are Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Florida and adjacent counties in southern Georgia, as well as the coastal areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

During deployment of the passenger-side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture. Flying metal fragments may strike and injure vehicle occupants.

Exploding Takata air bag inflators have been linked to six deaths worldwide. Ten automakers have issued Takata air bag recalls.

Nissan dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. Vehicle owners can reach Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261.
