Toyota is recalling 51,495 2011-2012 model-year Avalon sedans because the subwoofer speaker in the trunk is at risk for an intermittent electrical short that might damage the integrated circuit.

Such damage to the integrated circuit could lead to a short circuit between the power supply and the subwoofer, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. This condition poses a fire risk.

Toyota dealers will provide a remedy for the problem, free of charge. But until that solution is available, dealers will disconnect the subwoofer.

Vehicle owners can reach Toyota at (888) 270-9371.
