Mercedes-Benz has shifted production of its China-only R-Class crossover wagon to AM General, an Indiana-based vehicle manufacturer who once designed and produced Hummer military trucks at the facility.

Production of the R-Class will move to Mishwaka, Ind., from Tuscaloosa, Ala., so the luxury automaker can free up additional production capacity for other vehicles. Mercedes-Benz has signed a multi-year agreement, AM General has announced.

Mercedes-Benz ceased selling the R-Class in the U.S. in 2012 and stopped offering it in Europe in 2013. The vehicle is now exclusively sold in the Chinese market.

AM General is an automotive contract assembler who has worked for General Motors. The company owns Mobility Ventures, which produces the MV-1 paratransit van.
