Volvo is introducing a larger, more efficient multi-filter in the 2015 XC90 luxury SUV's cabin that will better control air quality, the automaker has announced.

Volvo has launched its CleanZone initiative to keep microscopic "fine dust" particles from entering the car. The new multi-filter was designed for Volvo's new SPA platform and first appears in the XC90 mid-size SUV. The filter uses a larger design and a layer of active charcoal that removes a variety of air-borne contaminants.

The filter reduces the amount of “fine dust” particles smaller than 0,4 μm by as much as 70 percent less than in a car without the filter, according to a standardized component test completed by Volvo. The filter reduces the amount of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, ground-level ozone, gases, and unpleasant odors.
