Mazda North American Operations is recalling 423 2008 model-year Tribute Hybrid vehicles so dealers can replace the hybrid system’s coolant pump, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

A faulty coolant pump can cause the hybrid electronics to overheat. As a result, the powertrain may shut down and disrupt the vehicle’s operation, NHTSA said.

The recall affects Tribute Hybrid cars manufactured from Oct. 10, 2006, to May 23, 2008.

Mazda dealers will replace the original motor electronics coolant (MEC) pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin Nov. 3.

Vehicle owners can reach Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5000. Mazda's number for this recall is 7814I.
