Ford Motor Co. is recalling 70,209 2005-2008 model-year Ford Escape Hybrid vehicles manufactured Oct. 13, 2003, to June 20, 2008, along with 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid vehicles manufactured June 10, 2005, to June 20, 2008.

The coolant pump for the hybrid system in these vehicles may fail, resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported. This overheating could lead the powertrain to shut down and the vehicle to stall.

Ford dealers will inspect each vehicle and replace the original motor electronics coolant (MEC) pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin on Oct. 27. Vehicle owners can reach Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S19.
