New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration will delay issuing an additional 6,000 permits to operators of so-called green cabs, a rival taxi fleet to the city's yellow-cab service.

There are now 5,081 green cabs operating in competition with yellow taxis, which are supported by a powerful lobby that helped elect the new mayor, reports the New York Times.

Meera Joshi, the city's new taxi commissioner, said the new permits would not be issued before "stakeholder engagement" on the plan.
