Ford is adding the rear inflatable safety belt to its 2014-MY Fusion, as well as to the 2014 Fusion Hybrid and Energi models. The automaker said its inflatable seatbelt combines the safety characteristics of seatbelts and airbags. During a collision, sensors determine when the belt deploys.

The automaker said it introduced inflatable rear safety belts on the 2011 Ford Explorer and now offers this technology on the Ford Flex, Taurus, and Lincoln MKT and MKZ.

Ford noted that out of its total Fusion sales, 72 percent of vehicles sold come with Ford’s cross-traffic alert rear sensing technology and 58 percent are equipped with a rear-view camera system.
