The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) found in a recent study that the Ford F-250 had the highest theft rate of any 2010-2012-MY vehicles. In addition to the F-250, a number of other trucks commonly used by fleets top the HLDI’s list, including the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Ford F-350. In previous years, the Cadillac Escalade topped the HLDI’s list.

The F-250’s four-wheel-drive crew cab model has a theft rate that is 7 per 1,000 insured vehicle years (one vehicle insured for one year), which is six times the average for all vehicles. HLDI noted that a theft claim from a pickup doesn’t necessarily mean the entire truck was stolen but rather than equipment was stolen from the truck’s bed, or possibly components from the vehicle. HLDI said it doesn’t distinguish the theft of contents from the theft of an entire vehicle.

Despite the changing lineup of vehicles popular with thieves, theft rates are declining, which HLDI attributes to the more widespread use of ignition immobilizers. This technology is standard in 89 percent of 2012-MY vehicles. HLDI noted that fewer pickup trucks have this technology, but MY-2010-2012 F-250 pickups come standard with it.

HLDI’s complete list of theft rates for 2010-2012-MY vehicles is below.
