California’s gasoline excise tax has gone up 3.5 cents per gallon, effective July 1, 2013. The previous rate was 36 cents per gallon and the new rate is 39.5 cents per gallon. This new rate is effective through June 30, 2014. The excise tax for diesel fuel remains unchanged.
According to the state, laws enacted in 2010 created a new tax structure for gasoline and diesel fuels. These laws require the state to adjust the excise tax rates by March 1 of each year such that the overall state taxes that consumers pay per gallon of fuel stay at the same rate as under the previous tax structure.
The average excise tax rate in the U.S. is 20.9 cents per gallong, according to the American Petroleum Institute.
