New York Senate and Assembly Pass Bills Outlawing Counterfeit Airbags

Both the New York State Assembly and Senate last week passed legislation banning the sale and installation of counterfeit and nonfunctional airbags.

The legislation, if signed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will take effect Nov. 1.

A violation would be considered a Class A misdemeanor. Violations involving 25 or more airbags, as well as violations from repeat offenders, would be subject to a civil penalty of no more than $1,000 for each violation.

Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a warning about counterfeit airbags.
