Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer signed new legislation into law that would limit the ability of cities and towns in the state to install traffic camera photo enforcements systems.

The legislation specifies that municipalities cannot install these types of systems on state highways unless the municipality can show that the system is necessary for public safety, gets a permit, or enters into a contract with the State’s Department of Transportation (ADOT) for use of a right-of-way.

Beyond these requirements, the bill says the ADOT can prevent a municipality from renewing a permit to operate a photo enforcement camera system.
