Kia Motors Corp. is recalling 623,658 2007-2010 model-year Rondo and Sportage, 2007-2011-MY Sorento, 2007-MY Sedona, 2010-2011-MY Soul and 2011-MY Optima vehicles because the stop lamp switch in the affected vehicles might malfunction.

If the stop lamp switch malfunctions, the brake lights may fail to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed. In addition, depressing the brake pedal may fail to deactivate the cruise control.

A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, and may affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light might also illuminate.

Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners can reach Kia at 1-800-333-4542.
