In Florida a texting-ban bill, sponsored by Senator Nancy Detert, won approval by the Senate Transportation Committee on a 9-0 vote on Feb. 6. The bill is now under consideration by the Communications, Energy and Public Utilities Committee.

If passed into law, the bill would make driving while texting a secondary offense and carry a first-time fine of $60 plus court costs.

A similar bill is pending in the Florida House.
