The former head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has called for black boxes to be installed in new cars and trucks as a way for federal regulators to collect uniform crash data, the Detroit News reported. Dr. Ricardo Martinez, who headed the NHTSA from 1994-99, urged the agency in October to maintain uniform data in a central database, and the findings could provide researchers a common set of data for auto crashes. Martinez said that about 11 manufacturers have already installed so-called “black box” recorders in their cars, trucks, sport/utility vehicles, and vans. NHTSA will seek public comments this spring, he said.
