Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling approximately 48,400 model-year 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles due to a software problem. Specifically, a software error in the park lock system may allow the vehicle to move after the gear selector has been placed in the Park 'P' position without the parking brake applied.

This scenario is dangerous as unintentional vehicle movement can increase the likelihood of a collision, according to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

To fix the problem, dealers will update the electronic stability program control unit software, at no cost to owners.

Owner notification letters will be mailed Jan. 31. Owners can reach DVUSA customer service at (877) 762-8267. DVUSA's reference number for this recall is VS3PA27 ERI/ERO.
