Audi began testing its semi-autonomous A7 equipped with a piloted driving mode in Albany, New York, shortly after receiving permission as the first automaker licensed to test autonomous vehicles in the state.

Audi hosted a media event on June 13 near the state capital to demonstrate Audi Highway Pilot, a technology that's considered Level 3 automation. The vehicle can pilot itself at posted highway speeds. Two trained engineers ride in the vehicle to monitor the system and ensure safety, according to Audi.

"Audi, with the partnership of forward-thinking states like New York, are at the forefront of defining the future of transportation," said Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America. "That kind of innovation only happens with industry and government working hand-in-hand toward a shared goal of safer roads."
