Kia Motors America is recalling 5,245 2013 model-year Kia Forte cars because the seat belt retractor retaining plates might shatter during a crash and strike vehicle occupants, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

The recall covers cars manufactured Sept. 10-Oct. 31 in 2012. The screws that hold the front seat belt retractor retaining plates may not have been properly tightened, NHTSA said.

Kia dealers will inspect and replace both front seat belt assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 30.

Vehicle owners can reach Kia customer service at (800) 333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC132.
