Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 54,779 2013-2015 model-year Outlander Sport SUVs because the front passenger seat belt lap end attachment fasteners might loosen over time because they weren’t torqued properly.

As a result, the fastener may not be able to withstand the load forces associated with a vehicle crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported. The recall covers Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured from July 20, 2012, to July 23 of this year.

Mitsubishi dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt lap end attachment fastener, free of charge. The recall began on Dec. 1.

Vehicle owners can reach Mitsubishi customer service at (714) 372-6000. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-011.
