UPS has reduced the number of preventative maintenance inspections to 120,000 per year from 240,000 in the past five years by implementing a telematics system, reports Entrepreneur.

Just in its fleet of medium-duty trucks, UPS improved fuel efficiency by 50 percent, said Dale Spencer, the company's director of automotive engineering and fleet supervisor.

The world's largest shipper operates more than 100,000 vehicles that log 3 billion miles per year. The UPS-owned vehicles are maintained at more than 1,400 UPS garages around the world.
