General Motors is recalling 89,294 2013-2015 model-year Chevrolet Spark and Spark EV hatchbacks because the hood might unexpectedly open while the car is being driven, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

The recall covers Spark vehicles manufactured from Jan. 17, 2012, to July 29, 2014.

The secondary hood latch may prematurely corrode at the latch pivot, causing the striker to get stuck out of position and preventing it from properly engaging the hood latch, NHTSA said. To fix the problem, GM dealers will replace the striker and latch with a new part that has superior corrosion protection.

Dealers will perform the repair service free of charge.

GM has not yet provided a notification schedule, NHTSA said.

Vehicle owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14456.
