Mercedes Gets It Right with Plush, Polished SUV

November 26, 2007

MONTVALE, N.J. – Mercedes debuted the ML550. It's powered by a 5.5-liter, V-8 engine with 382 hp.

The steering wheel is polished burl wood and leather. Two DVD screens were installed behind the driver and passenger seat, and a lift-gate in back opened and closed with the push of a button.

The ML just turned 10 years old, and for its birthday it gets an injection of extra power. In fact, it's 26-percent more powerful than its predecessor, the ML500.

Despite the bigger engine, the ML550's driving characteristics are decidedly aimed at comfort-seekers rather than sport enthusiasts. Takeoff is pleasing, though, and there's a decent amount of belly-fire at highway speed. Mileage is 13 mpg in the city, 17 on the highway.
