Fuji Develops Hybrid Powertrain for Subaru Legacy

August 23, 2005

TOKYO — Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., which makes Subarus, said it is working on a hybrid powertrain equipped with a turbocharged engine for the Legacy, according to Automotive News. The company plans to test a limited number of the cars in Japan in 2007. It’s uncertain when Fuji Heavy could bring the powertrain to the United States. Together with NEC Corp., a major Japanese electronics maker, Fuji Heavy says it has developed a battery for the hybrid that can last 15 years. Hybrids combine a gasoline engine and one or more electric motors to power the wheels.
