Former Director of Fleet Services for Torrance, Calif., Dies After Heart Surgery

TORRANCE, CA — Thomas Whittle, manager of the Torrance, Calif. transit department for years, died May 14, after heart surgery, reported the Daily Breeze newspaper. He was 65. Whittle spent his career as a transportation planner and director, according to the Daily Breeze newspaper. He had overseen Torrance's buses and other transportation services for the past six years, with a $19 million operating budget and 145 employees. Whittle came to Torrance in 1996 as transportation administrator, then served as the director of fleet services before becoming the transit director. He underwent surgery for an aortic aneurysm, and died May 14 following complications, reported the Daily Breeze.
