Mercury's new 2006-model mid-size sedan will be named the Mercury Milan, the company announced on August 25. The Milan is the fourth of six new vehicles planned for Mercury over the next four years. Constructed on the same platform as the Ford Fusion and Lincoln Zephyr, which also debut next year, and the Milan will be built at Ford’s assembly plant in Hermosillo, Mexico. The Milan will be positioned between the Fusion and the Zephyr. The Milan, Fusion and Zephyr are expected to be slightly larger than the Mazda6 — all four models share parts and engineering — but shorter than the Taurus and Mercury Sable, which will be discontinued. In addition to the Milan, Mercury’s model lineup is expanding with the introduction of the Montego sedan and Mariner SUV this quarter. Mercury will also get a version of the Ford Freestyle crossover wagon after 2006.
