EPA Certifies First Hybrid SUV

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has certified the first hybrid SUV for sale in the United States.The Ford Escape Hybrid complies with EPA's stringent new emission standards for light-duty vehicles and trucks, and according to EPA estimates, the two-wheel drive version gets 36 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The four-wheel drive fuel economy is estimated at 33 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Model-year 2004 SUVs averaged 17.9 mpg.
