Honda Unveils Next Generation Fuel Cell
Honda Motor Co., Ltd., announced development of a new generation of fuel cells for cars that is cheaper, smaller, and capable of operating in sub-freezing temperatures. The new Honda FC Stack runs at temperatures as cold as –4 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 C). Cold weather operation has been a significant technical barrier in the mass-market application of fuel cell technology. Honda also simplified the fuel cell stack design, cutting the number of component parts by half from previous versions. The stack’s weight was also trimmed by 55 lbs. to 106 lbs. The new stack will be easier and cheaper to produce and can be recycled, according to Honda.Virtually pollution-free, fuel cell-powered cars run on electricity produced when hydrogen stored in a tank combines with oxygen in the air. The only byproduct is water.
