ChevronTexaco Plans to Phase out California MBTE

May 23, 2002

World Fuels Today announced May 22 that, according to company spokeswoman Nicole Hodgeson, ChevronTexaco Corp. will discontinue the sale of gasoline containing MTBE in California. Company chief David O’Reilly said the company has launched a program at its California refineries to produce MTBE-free gasoline. According to Hodgeson, the company is already selling more than 3.5 billion gallons of oxygenate-free gasoline in northern California. Hodgeson also said that the company has been attempting to phase out MTBE, but has not been able to completely because of California areas like Sacramento that require an oxygenate. “But we aim to reduce MTBE as soon as possible,” Hodgeson added.
