ATA to Test 'Smart' Biometric ID Card for Truck Drivers

May 23, 2002

American Trucking Associations (ATA) is preparing a pilot program to use biometric information to verify truck driver identities, but trucking company executives expressed concern about who would shoulder the burden of paying for the system. Officials of some large carriers attending the ATA Safety & Loss Prevention Management Council’s Security Forum, May 14-15, said most of the costs would be shifted to them because not all trucking companies are likely to participate. ATA, along with Lockheed Martin Information Systems and ChoicePoint Authentication Services, plans to start running tests later this month on a biometric data card, said James Carlson, manager of business development for Lockheed.
