2002 Jeep Grand Cherokees to Be Recalled for Repair of On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) System

January 22, 2002

The Chrysler Group announced that it will conduct a voluntary recall of some 2002 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees to address a noncompliance issue relating to the On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system. The ORVR system is a new government requirement for this model year vehicle. The recall will affect 76,143 (71,677 in the United States, 2,997 in Canada, 1,181 in Mexico and 288 International) 2002 model year vehi-cles with brush guards, built through the end of the 2001 calendar year.Two-thirds of these vehicles also will be checked for other ORVR issues, including the Fuel Inlet Check Valve, which may cause fuel to spit back, and an issue within the Evaporative Vapor Canister that may prevent a customer from fueling. During an internal test it was determined that, in a high-speed rear impact, the fuel valve might become detached from the tank, allowing fuel to leak in the unlikely event of a post-crash rollover. This issue would not occur in low-speed bumper collisions. The company determined that the system is inconsistent with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 301 and notified NHTSA that it would implement a safety recall to address the noncompliance. The company will remedy the noncompliance by installing a reinforcement bracket. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. For information about the recall, contact the DaimlerChrysler Customer Call Center at (800) 853-1403.
