Although this is just a concept, BMW said the vehicle's powertrain technology, eDrive, will make its way into future electric and plug-in electric models.

MUNICH and BEIJING – BMW showed its i8 Concept Spyder vehicle with the automaker’s BMW eDrive technology in Beijing. BMW stated that eDrive technology is what the company will use in its future electric and plug-in hybrid cars from the BMW i sub-brand.

BMW showed its i3 electric and i8 plug-in hybrid models at its first-ever fleet preview in Sept. 2011, in Spartanburg, S.C.

The BMW eDrive is the collection of components that make up the electric drivetrain, including BMW’s electric motor (developed in-house by the automaker), the lithium-ion battery, and the “intelligent” motor management system.

The company said the battery and intelligent motor management system offer a “substantial increase” in range and power for vehicles but didn’t provide any specific range or performance figures as of yet.
