The 2018 model-year Hyundai Sonata, when equipped with optional front crash prevention and dynamic bending headlights, has qualified for a 2017 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Hyundai said.

To win this prestigious safety award, vehicles must earn the top rating of “good” in each of the institute’s five crashworthiness categories — the small overlap crash test, moderate overlap crash test, side and roof strength evaluation and head restraint tests. Moreover, the vehicle must have an available front crash prevention system garnering an “advanced” or “superior” rating. Winners also must score no less than an “acceptable” rating in the headlight test.

“Above all other things, safety of the occupants is the single most important factor when designing and engineering Hyundai vehicles,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of corporate and digital planning for Hyundai Motor America.
