Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 174,382 vehicles, including 2007-2013 model-year Outlander V-6 SUVs, in states that use road salt, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

The recalled vehicles are at risk for corrosion of the front cross member, which may result in detachment of the front control arm and loss of vehicle control.

In addition to the Outlander V-6 SUVs, the recall covers older models — 2002-2007 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-2006 Lancer Evolution, and 2003-2006 Outlander vehicles, according to NHTSA.

They were all originally sold in — or were at some time registered in — Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, or the District of Columbia.

Dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it. These repairs will be performed free of charge.

Vehicle owners can reach Mitsubishi customer service at (888) 648-7820. The company’s number for this recall is SR-16-003.
