Hyundai Motor Company is recalling 173,000 2011 model-year Sonata sedans because they may have damaged electronic power steering (EPS) circuit boards, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

If the vehicle loses power steering assist, the driver would need to make a greater effort to steer — especially at lower speeds, NHTSA said. Such a condition increases the risk of a crash.

The recall covers vehicles manufactured from Dec. 11, 2009, to Oct. 31, 2010.

Hyundai dealers will replace the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 30.

Vehicle owners can reach Hyundai customer service at (855) 371-9640. Hyundai's number for this recall is 143.
