Chevrolet has provided additional details about the gasoline and diesel engines that will power the 2016 Cruze to give the compact car a greater balance of power and efficiency, according to a release.

The new Ecotec engines will be paired with a six-speed Hydra-Matic 6T35 automatic transmission.

General Motors is adding a new turbo 1.4-liter inline-four cylinder as the standard engine that features direct injection and makes 153 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. Chevrolet will offer an available 1.5-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that's paired with a five-speed manual transmission.

Chevrolet will also offer a clean diesel engine in 2017. The 1.6-liter diesel powerplant is capable of running B-20 biodiesel, and has been offered with the Cruze in Europe. Chevrolet will release power ratings for this engine closer to its release.
