Mercedes-Benz showed off a self-driving luxury research sedan at the Consumer Electronics Show that allows occupants to relax in a "lounge-like interior" or get some work done while being driven from point to point.

The automaker showed its F 015 Luxury in Motion vehicle for the first time in Las Vegas to showcase future automotive mobility trends.

"Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society," said Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space."

Mercedes-Benz acknowledged the vehicle's "unusual proportions" measuring 205.5 inches in length, 79.4 inches in width, and 60 inches high.

The vehicle weighs about 40 percent less than a similar conventional model with a body that incorporates carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), aluminum, and high-strength steels. The vehicles also uses a saloon-door style door system with rear-hinged rear doors.

The vehicle's body shell was designed to allow the impact-protected integration of an electric drive system with a fuel cell that's based on the F-CELL plug-in hybrid system seen in the F 125! research vehicle from 2011. A CFRP tank stores the pressurized hydrogen fuel.
