Nissan North America is recalling 6,562 vehicles – hybrid versions of the Infiniti Q50, Q70 and M35 – because a software error might lead to gradual unintended acceleration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

If the signal is lost from one of the two throttle position sensors (TPS), the engine control module (ECM) will go into a fail-safe mode and partially close the throttle chamber. If the lost signal is later restored, the throttle chamber may open – regardless of the position signal from the TPS. The reopening of the throttle chamber may trigger a gradual unexpected acceleration, posing a safety risk, NHTSA said.

The 2013-2014 model-year Infiniti M35 hybrid vehicles were manufactured from April 7, 2012, to Sept. 9, 2013. The 2014-MY Infiniti Q50 hybrid vehicles were manufactured from Dec.10, 2012, to July 15 of this year. The 2014-2015-MY Infiniti Q70 hybrid vehicles were manufactured from April 9, 2010, to May 7 of this year.

Infiniti dealers will reprogram the ECM, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the middle of this month.

Earlier in the week, NHTSA announced two recalls addressing motor and transmission assembly problems in Infiniti Q50 and Q70 hybrid models.
