General Motors is providing Crisis Assist to all OnStar customers regardless of their subscription plan on the eve of the Atlantic hurricane season, the automaker announced.

The service will connect OnStar customers to emergency responders even if other forms of communication become unavailable.

By pushing OnStar's red or blue button, drivers will be put in contact with an advisor who can send emergency responders to the vehicle's exact location using OnStar's embedded cellular system and GPS technology.

The advisors can also provide alternative routes to hospitals, hotels or shelters and keep subscribers connected to family and friends. Subscribers can also report dangerous situations or road closures.

GM has relationships with more than 6,000 911 emergency call centers nationwide.
