Chevrolet is redesigning the Spark for 2016 by adding a new inline-4 that will help the minicar achieve 40 mpg on the highway, General Motors announced at the New York International Auto Show.

The automaker is adding a new 1.4L Ecotec engine with a manual or continuously variable transmission.

Chevrolet is also offering new safety options, including a side blind spot alert, lane departure warning, and a forward collision alert. The next-generation Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system will use a 7-inch color touch screen. The Spark will also offer a dot-matrix LCD instrument cluster display.

The 2016 Spark will be offered in 40 global markets.
