Chrysler Planning New Compacts, Subcompacts in 2012 and 2013

July 12, 2011

AUBURN HILLS, MI – Chrysler is planning a number of new compact and subcompact models for the U.S. in 2012 and 2013. Originally reported in The Detroit News, Automotive Fleet contacted Chrysler to confirm its vehicle-related plans.

Rick Deneau, head of brands - Chrysler Brand, Sales, Network Development & Fleet Communication, confirmed Chrysler plans to build subcompact models for its Dodge and Chrysler brands, and build a replacement for the mid-size Chrysler 200, in 2013. The company also said it’s building a compact Dodge model that’s constructed on a widened version of the Alfa Romeo Giuletta's platform. The Detroit News article said this platform is likely for a compact Chrysler plans to introduce in 2012.

The company’s Jeep brand will get a new subcompact model in 2013, and the Compass and Patriot will be replaced by a single SUV in 2013. Lastly, the automaker’s spokesperson said it plans to introduce an 8-speed transmission on the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.

These plans follow Chrysler’s five-year plan, announced in late 2009, to increase car sales and contract production derived from Fiat platforms up to 60 by 2014. Also, the addition of the 8-speed transmission to the 300 and Charger are in line with the company’s plans to increase portfolio-wide fuel economy by 25 percent by 2014.
