HERNDON, VA - Audi may sell the next version of its new A1 compact car in the U.S. to challenge BMW's Mini, German news source Handelsblatt reported, citing Peter Schwarzenbauer, the head of sales.

The move, following the model's introduction in Europe in mid-2010, would be part of Ingolstadt, Germany-based Audi's plan to surpass BMW and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz in all markets worldwide by 2015, Handelsblatt said. Audi aims in the next two to three years to sell more than 100,000 cars in the U.S., where BMW already delivers 270,000 vehicles, the newspaper reported.
