AUBURN HILLS, MI – Audi presented the first 12-cylinder diesel engine concept sports car at the Detroit Auto Show. The V12 TDI, with a displacement of 6 liters, powers the car on an Audi R8 model. It generates 500 hp, according to www.charleston.net. It sprints from zero to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. Its top speed is rated at 205 mph.

The road-going version of the new V12 TDI is being built in Hungary. The R8 V12 TDI concept already fulfills the Euro 6 emissions standard that is likely to take effect in 2014.

The entire body shell of the car weighs just 463 pounds due to the supporting structure made of extruded aluminum. One new aspect is the glass roof of the passenger compartment with two large sections.
