Coleman's career in fleet management began in school bus operations at Laidlaw Transit in 1983, where he held positions from head dispatcher to the division manager. Following this, Coleman began his career path in corporate fleet management at Pinkerton Security and Investigations in 1995.

Coleman later moved to the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) as fleet operations supervisor, where he became involved with alternative-fuel vehicle operations. In addition, Coleman was responsible for the UCLA campus Daily Rental Program and the administration of vehicle records for a fleet of 750 vehicles. Coleman worked at UCLA from September 1998 to June 1999.

He started in the cable industry in 2001, joining AT&T Broadband, which was acquired by Comcast in 2002. In 2006, he integrated three fleets in the Greater Los Angeles operations of Comcast, Adelphia, and Time Warner Cable. In 2010, he added to his responsibilities the San Diego fleet operations.

At the time of his death, Coleman managed the West Region fleet of 13,000 service trucks, which also included Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Idaho, California, and Hawaii.

Coleman was active in the NAFA Fleet Management Association and was the chair and vice-chair of the NAFA Pacific Southwest Chapter. A memorial service will be held at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Chapel at 10 a.m. on May 4. Additional information can be found here.
